August 30, 2024 - Relaxed Performance

At The Grove Theatre, we strongly believe that everyone in our community should have the opportunity to enjoy the art we present on our stage. Many individuals may not feel comfortable in a traditional theatre setting for various reasons and to address this we offer select Relaxed Performances of our productions.

This season, a Relaxed Performance of "Into The Woods" will occur on August 30, 2024

What is a Relaxed Performance?

Relaxed performances are an adapted form of theatre designed to welcome individuals who may not feel comfortable in a traditional theatre environment. These performances make plays more accessible from sensory, emotional, and physical perspectives. Relaxed performances are about inclusivity, diversity, and empathy.

People who might enjoy relaxed performances include – but are not limited to – those with autism, sensory processing conditions, anxiety, learning or intellectual disabilities.

How are Relaxed Performances different?

The artistic integrity of a play remains the same, with the audience experience of relaxed performances differing in a few key ways.

  • There is a pre-show introduction to let people know what to expect and to establish an inclusive environment.

  • The audience is reminded that there is a casual approach to movement and noise within the amphitheatre. Patrons can fidget, stand up, stretch, make noise, and exit and re-enter the space at any point during the show, for whatever reason.

  • Harsh sound and lighting effects are reduced.
